Tourist Information : Local Customs

Brunei is a Malay Muslim Monarchy, so it is important to note that Islam is the main religion in the country although some other religions are practiced. Visitors to Brunei have to understand the importance of local customs as it is partly from a religious aspect.

Upon landing in Brunei, you will first notice the heat and humidity. It is understandable that visitors will find this overwhelming and will dress to feel more comfortable, but it is advisable for ladies to wear suitable clothing that does not expose the arms, the torso, and legs above the knee or tight clothing. Although most women in Brunei are found to be wearing a headress, it is not required of foriegners. Men are advised not to go shirtless although this is tolerated.

When visting a mosque, ladies will have covered their arms, legs and head. At most mosques, visitors will be provided with some appropriate robes. When visiting the prayer rooms, do not walk in front of anyone in prayer or reading the quran, and when walking in front of people who are seated on the floor, as a mark of respect to bow down slightly with hand extended towards the front, and walk in this fashion until you have passed in front of them.

In Brunei, the locals are very friendly and greet people as they pass. They shake hands by extended both hands forward, palms facing each other at a slight distance apart, and take the others persons right hand between them. This is known as "Salaam". Members of the opposite sex do not shake hands.
