Brunei Darussalam: The Abode of Peace

Brunei Darussalam is a small sultanate, located in the northwest corner of the Borneo island along the shores of the South Chine Sea. It comprises a total area of 5,765 square kilometres and is divided into four districts, namely; Brunei-Muara, Tutong, Belait and Temburong. Its capital is Bandar Seri Begawan, located in the Brunei-Muara district.

About 70% of its total land area is of unspoiled rainforest, home to many varieties of flora and fauna endemic only to the island of Borneo. The population is mainly composed of Malays with a mixture of Chinese and Indian communities. Expatriates and a few indigenous groups comprise a minority of the population. Bahasa Melayu is the country's official language.

Brunei has a warm, equatorial climate throughout the year with negligible seasonal variations. Situated off the typhoon and earthquake 'belts', Brunei nevertheless receives high levels of rainfall and humidity. The country is ruled according to established Islamic values and treditions by the present monarch, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah. Its form of government is called a Malay Islamic Monarchy (Melayu Islam Beraja) and one of the oldest in the region with over 600 years of recorded history.
